Response To Christian Extremist Group Demonstration At DePauw University

Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. responds to Christian extremist group demonstration at DePauw University
Hoboken, N.J. – On Wednesday, September 23rd, an extremist Christian group with no affiliation to any particular church, held a demonstration on DePauw University’s campus rebuking the behavior of college students by making hateful statements such as “you deserve to go to hell”! The National Executive Board of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. (LSU) would like to release an official statement on the matter with DePauw being the founding location of the Elegua Chapter.
The demonstration started on Wednesday with the extremists preaching at students as they walked by, with the sole purpose of condemning students for practicing “unholy behavior”, “excessive sexuality” and partying. As tensions rose, students were no longer able to remain silent and began holding their own demonstrations to speak out against the hateful statements being made by the extremists. This particular group has been known to tour the state of Indiana hosting similar demonstrations at various college campuses.
“DePauw is my alma mater and situations like these happen every year,” says National Director of Philanthropy and Community Affairs, John Yates. “Every year, students at DePauw prepare themselves for the next ‘attack’ and have always been ready to fight against it effectively and with so much passion. However, this weighs heavy on the students and lingers for weeks afterwards.”
Student organizations banded together to stand in solidarity, including Craig Carter, the President of Student Government. This incident occurred on the same day as news about alleged nooses were found at the University of Delaware made national headlines. The National Executive Board will be contacting representatives from both institutions to offer their support as these communities begin to recover. “These students have a right to a safe space and we will do our part to help make it so”, said John.
